Engie has signed a binding agreement to buy Broad Reach Power for an undisclosed sum. The France-based energy company said Thursday that it is buying the Texas battery-storage firm from EnCap and Apollo, two private equity firms, as part of its goal to hold 10 gigawatts of battery capacity by 2030. The transaction involves 350 megawatts of operating assets and 880 megawatts under construction assets with commissioning expected before the end of 2024, Engie said. The deal also includes advanced-stage projects totaling 1.7 gigawatts. The deal is expected to close by the fourth quarter and is subject to anti-trust and energy regulatory authorities, Engie said.
AstraZeneca’s prostate-cancer treatment Lynparza has been approved in Japan, while Soliris has been approved for expanded use to treat generalized myasthenia gravis, the company said Thursday. The Anglo-Swedish pharma giant said Lynparza, which is being jointly developed with Merck & Co., has been approved in combination with abiraterone and prednisolone for the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. The approval was based on a late-stage study, which showed that the combination reduced the risk of disease progression or death by 77% when compared with the abiraterone treatment alone. In a separate statement, AstraZeneca said Soliris has been approved in Japan to be used for the treatment of generalized myasthenia gravis in pediatric patients under certain conditions. The treatment is the first and only targeted therapy approved for the treatment of children and adolescents with the condition in the country.
Harbour Energy narrowed its full-year production guidance to the lower end of the range, after pretax profits dropped in the first half of the year amid weaker energy prices. The U.K. oil-and-gas company said Thursday its pretax profit fell to $429.1 million in the half-year from $1.49 billion in the prior-year’s similar period, which missed analysts’ forecasts of $651.7 million, according to a consensus compiled by Visible Alpha. Revenue declined to $1.99 billion from $2.66 billion a year prior, missing the $2.06-billion market consensus, mainly on lower post-hedging realised prices and a reduction in liquid production volumes. “We remain focused on maximising the value of our U.K. oil and gas portfolio,” Chief Executive Linda Cook said. Production averaged 196,000 oil-equivalent barrels a day, down from 211,000 daily barrels a year prior. The FTSE 250-listed company narrowed its production guidance for the year to 185,000-195,000 oil-equivalent barrels a day from 185,000-200,000 daily barrels, while cutting its capital expenditure view to $1.0 billion from $1.1 billion. Its cost guidance of $16 per BOE was unchanged. Harbour Energy declared an interim dividend of $100 million, on par with prior-year’s.
Intertek Group has bought PlayerLync Holdings, a provider of mobile-first training and learning content, for an undisclosed sum. The inspection and product-testing company said Thursday that PlayerLync will become part of its people assurance business. PlayerLync employs 35 people and generated revenue of 6.1 million pounds ($7.8 million) in 2022.
Norwegian Air Shuttle on Thursday reported a fall in second-quarter net profit, but said demand remains strong and that it has begun examining the potential for a dividend. The low-cost carrier reported a net profit of 537.9 million Norwegian kroner ($50.8 million), down from NOK1.25 billion a year earlier. Total revenue rose 41% to NOK6.87 billion in the quarter from NOK4.87 billion a year before, as it carried 5.6 million passengers compared with 5.0 million a year earlier. Passenger demand for air travel grew significantly through the quarter as Norwegian ramped up capacity into the busy summer travel season. The airline is experiencing strong demand across markets, though earnings are affected by macroeconomic uncertainty, predominantly relating to the weakening of the Norwegian kroner against the U.S. dollar and euro, it said. The company said it is experiencing positive demand trends across key markets and unit revenue is expected to increase significantly this year compared with last year, supported by the summer 2023 season being one of the strongest in Norwegian’s history.
“Current booking momentum remains strong,” it said. “Bookings and visibility for the fourth quarter and thereafter is limited, as is to be expected at this time of the year. While there is no sign of weakness in forward bookings, the company is mindful of demand uncertainties following potential weaknesses in consumer confidence.” Norwegian said it has begin a process to ensure that its capital structure is fit-for-purpose, that also looks to enable a potential dividend distribution.
Credit Suisse said it has abandoned its plan to launch an initial public offering for its Credit Suisse 1a Immo PK real-estate fund due to low trading volumes for listed Swiss real-estate funds. The Swiss bank–now part of UBS Group–said Thursday that Credit Suisse Funds decided not to carry out the IPO, which had been planned for the fourth quarter of 2023, and that this will allow the newly formed real-estate unit within UBS Asset Management to coordinate its offer of real-estate investment services. A fall in trading volumes on the market for listed Swiss real-estate funds would likely have meant higher volatility in the event of a listing, Credit Suisse said. The bank last year postponed the IPO of the fund, citing market conditions and the high volatility.
