AngloGold Ashanti said that first-half net profit fell and backed its guidance for the year as it booked impairments in its Brazilian portfolio. The South African gold miner said Friday that net profit was $40 million, compared with $298 million the year before. Basic earnings were $40 million, or 10 cents a share, compared with $298 million and 71 cents. The company said this was due to a $141 million loss mainly related to impairments in its Brazil portfolio. Basic earnings were expected to be between $25 million and $54 million. Headline earnings–one of the company’s preferred metrics, which strips out exceptional and other one-off items–were $140 million, or 33 cents a share, compared with $300 million, or 71 cents. The company said earlier this week that it expected headline earnings of between $125 million and $155 million. The company said gold production in the period rose to 1.24 million ounces, as expected, from 1.23 million ounces a year prior due to increased production from several mines and higher grades recovered. Second-quarter output was 652,000 ounces versus 584,000 for the first quarter. The board declared an interim dividend of 4 cents a share, down from 29 cents a year earlier. For 2023 the company expects capital expenditure in the $960 million to $1.07 billion range. “We’re expecting strong operating improvements in the second half,” Chief Executive Alberto Calderon said.
Vonovia on Friday reported a decrease in revenue and earnings in the first half of the year as sale proceeds and recurring sales fell and confirmed its outlook for 2023. The German real-estate company posted adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of 1.34 billion euros ($1.47 billion) for the first half compared with EUR1.40 billion in the same period of the previous year. Total segment revenue for the period was EUR2.93 billion, compared with EUR3.10 billion. Vonovia said the fall in revenue was mainly due to lower proceeds from the sale of real estate inventories and lower sales in the recurring sales segment. Group funds from operations –the company’s key figure for operational profitability, also called FFO– was EUR964.8 million compared with EUR1.06 billion. The company confirmed its previously given outlook. It continues to expect segment revenue of EUR6.4 billion to EUR7.2 billion and FFO of between EUR1.75 billion and EUR1.95 billion in 2023.
Commerzbank on Friday reported higher earnings for the second quarter, driven by higher interest rates, and said it expects net interest income for the full year to be higher than previously expected. The German bank posted net profit of 565 million euros ($618.6 million) for the second quarter of the year, up from EUR470 million in the same quarter a year earlier. Net interest income–a key profit driver for retail banks such as Commerzbank–reached a record level thanks to the continued rise in interest rates, jumping to EUR2.13 billion from EUR1.48 billion the previous year, the bank said. Operating profit rose to EUR888 million from EUR746 million the year prior. The bank continues to expect net profit for the full year 2023 to be well above the previous year’s level, as it had previously forecast. Net interest income, however, is expected higher at a minimum of EUR7.8 billion. The bank had previously guided for about EUR7 billion. Net commission income is expected slightly below the previous year’s level Commerzbank said.
Swiss Re’s net profit rose sharply in the first half, with all of its business contributing to the result, and particularly a low natural-catastrophe burden in its property-and-casualty segment in the second quarter. The Zurich-based reinsurer said Friday that net profit was $1.45 billion in the first half compared with $157 million in the same period last year. In the second quarter alone, profit was $804 million compared with the $643 million the company reported for the first. Net premiums earned and fee income for the first half increased to $22.14 billion from $21.20 billion a year before, with higher net premiums earned in both property-and-casualty and life-and-health reinsurance. Swiss Re said life-and-health’s performance returned to prepandemic levels. The company said it achieved a price increase of 21% in a July 1 renewal round of property-and-casualty reinsurance contracts, when the treaty premium volume renewed amounted to $4.3 billion. Swiss Re maintained its 2023 profit target of more than $3 billion.
