Varta AG said Thursday that it would pay a dividend for the first time after sales and earnings grew in 2020, boosted by demand for its battery products. The German company, which makes batteries for high-tech consumer products and hearing aids, said revenue increased to 870 million euros ($1.05 billion) from EUR362.7 million. Adjusted earnings before interest and taxes was EUR239 million compared with EUR97.5 million, while the adjusted Ebitda margin rose to 27.5% from 26.9%. The company plans to pay a dividend of around EUR2.50 a share, which includes a special dividend payment, it said. Varta said its microbatteries and solutions segment recorded particularly strong growth, driven by high demand. The company said it was looking ahead to 2021 with optimism. Varta expects a double-digit percentage profit increase in 2021, and expects revenue to reach EUR940 million, with growth expected especially in the second half of the year. The company will release its full annual results on March 31.

Barclays PLC posted a profit in 2020 as buoyant securities trading made up for a lackluster banking performance in the U.K., where the coronavirus pandemic caused the largest economic contraction among the world’s advanced economies. Net profit at the London-based bank fell 38% from a year earlier to GBP1.53 billion, equivalent to $2.12 billion. Profit at Barclays’s corporate and investment bank rose 29% to GBP2.55 billion. The results support the strategy of Barclays Chief Executive Jes Staley, who has fended off demands from activist investor Edward Bramson to scale back the investment bank. Mr. Bramson’s Sherborne Investors says it owns 5.8% of Barclays. European lenders with large securities-trading units, such as Deutsche Bank AG and BNP Paribas SA, have fared better in the pandemic. “2020 demonstrated the value of our diversified banking model,” Mr. Staley said in a statement. Revenue from its markets unit, which trades fixed-income securities, equities and derivatives, rose 45% to GBP7.61 billion. Its cards-and-payments unit lost GBP388 million in 2020 on impairments and lower economic activity. Barclays shares have risen 5% this year after dropping 18% in 2020. Barclays set aside GBP492 million in the last three months of the year to cover bad loans, bringing the total for the year to GBP4.84 billion, more than double the amount for 2019. Barclays said it intends to pay a dividend for 2020 and to buy back up to GBP700 million of shares.

Hochschild Mining PLC on Thursday reported a weaker profit for 2020, as lower gold and silver production more than offset stronger commodity prices. The FTSE 250 precious-metals miner, which operates in Peru and Argentina, made a pretax profit of $62.9 million, down from $76.8 million for 2019. Adjusted Ebitda declined 21% to $270.9 million and revenue dropped 18% to $621.8 million. “Hochschild’s output in 2020 was impacted by Covid-related stoppages at all our mines with the first major disruption lasting from the middle of March until the end of May,” Chief Executive Ignacio Bustamante said. The company proposed a final dividend of 2.335 cents a share, having paid none a year earlier.

Electricite de France SA said Thursday that profit dropped for 2020 and it confirmed its targets for the 2021-22 period. The French utility company said net profit was 650 million euros ($784 million) for the full year compared with EUR5.16 billion a year earlier. The company attributed the fall partly to nonrecurring items, including a tax litigation in France and changes to the U.K. corporate tax rate. Revenue decreased to EUR69.03 billion from EUR71.35 billion the previous year. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization were down 3.3% on year to EUR16.17 billion. EDF said earnings were hit by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, mainly on nuclear power in France, reductions in power consumptions with a slowdown in projects and services, as well as a decline in distributed volumes and grid-connection works. The company said its board of directors will propose a dividend of EUR0.21 a share for 2020, which equates to a payout rate of 45% of net income excluding nonrecurring items.

Moneysupermarket.com Group PLC on Thursday reported a fall in pretax profit for 2020 on lower revenue due to the negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The price-comparison website made a pretax profit of 87.8 million pounds ($121.7 million) for the year, compared with GBP116.0 in 2019. Revenue fell to GBP344.9 million from GBP388.4 million the prior year. The board declared a final dividend of 8.61 pence, taking the full-year payout to 11.71 pence, same as in 2019. “Our end markets continue to be impacted by Covid-19 restrictions and the pace of lockdown measures being eased will be a major driver of our 2021 performance,” the company said.

Repsol SA said Thursday that net loss narrowed in the fourth quarter of last year but business suffered from a challenging environment due to the coronavirus pandemic, with falling commodity prices hurting its inventories. The Spanish energy company reported a net loss of 711 million euros ($857.6 million), compared with a net loss of EUR5.28 billion for the year-earlier period, when it booked an impairment of EUR4.85 billion. On an adjusted basis, net profit for the quarter came in at EUR404 million. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in the period decreased to EUR1.26 billion from EUR1.85 billion in the year earlier. Repsol said upstream production in the fourth quarter reached an average of 628,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day. Adjusted income in upstream rose to EUR195 million on year, mainly due to lower costs. For the full year, the company registered a net loss of EUR3.29 billion compared with a loss of EUR3.82 billion the year before. Adjusted net income for 2020 was EUR600 million compared with EUR2.04 billion the previous year. Repsol said its net debt stood at EUR3.04 billion at the end of the year.

Smith & Nephew PLC said Thursday that 2020 pretax profit fell sharply on lower revenue, and that the outlook reflects the likely continuation of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the first half of 2021. The FTSE-100 medical-technology group said there is uncertainty regarding the pace and the timing of recovery. The company posted a pretax profit of $246 million for last year, compared with $743 million for 2019. A forecast, taken from FactSet, had projected the figure at $268 million. Net profit fell to $448 million, from $600 million in the previous year, the company said. This beat a consensus estimate of $346.9 million, taken from FactSet and based on seven analysts’ forecasts. Revenue for 2020 came in at $4.56 billion compared with $5.14 billion the year before. A consensus estimate, based on the forecasts of 12 analysts polled by FactSet, had seen the figure at $4.61 billion. The trading profit margin for the year was 15%, with a trading profit of $683 million. The board recommended a final dividend of 23.1 cents. Smith & Nephew said it expects to deliver substantial underlying growth in 2021 compared with last year, and that it expects an improved profit margin this year.

Daimler AG said Thursday net profit for 2020 increased and it proposed a higher dividend for the year. Net profit for 2020 rose to 3.63 billion euros ($4.37 billion) from EUR2.38 billion a year earlier, the German premium car maker said. After tax profit for the fourth quarter was EUR3.59 billion, compared with a loss of EUR11 million in the same period a year earlier, it said. Revenue for the full year fell 11% to EUR154.31 billion, while quarterly revenue came in 1% lower at EUR46.62 billion. Daimler had already released some preliminary figures for 2020, with earnings before interest and taxes of EUR6.60 billion and adjusted EBIT of EUR8.64 billion. It now proposed a dividend of EUR1.35 a share for 2020, up from EUR0.90 per share for 2019. In 2018, the dividend was EUR3.25. Looking ahead, Daimler expects group sales, revenue and EBIT in 2021 to be significantly above the prior-year level. Sales in the first quarter should be affected by the semiconductor shortage the industry is currently facing, it said.

Hays PLC said Thursday that pretax profit fell 78% in the first half of fiscal 2021 on the back of a fall in turnover and net fees in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The recruitment company said that for the six months ended Dec. 31, pretax profit fell to 21.1 million pounds ($29.3 million) from GBP95.6 million in the comparable period a year earlier. Turnover for the first half dropped to GBP2.76 billion from GBP3.10 billion a year prior. Net fees shrank 24% over the half to GBP422.8 million, as Hays’ U.K. and Ireland, German, and Australian markets slumped. The board didn’t declare an interim dividend to conserve cash, but said that it would resume ordinary and special dividends at the final results in August. The company said that the post-New Year early second half was slower than in previous years, but that activity rose to pre-Christmas levels and profits began to increase by early February.

Bouygues SA said Thursday that it will separate the functions of chairman and chief executive, and reported falling net profit and sales for 2020. The French construction-and-media conglomerate said Deputy Chief Executive Officer Olivier Roussat will replace Martin Bouygues as chief executive effective immediately. Mr. Bouygues will remain chairman of the group. Bouygues posted a net profit of 696 million euros ($838.2 million) for the year compared with EUR1.18 billion for 2019. Sales were EUR34.69 billion, down from EUR37.93 billion. Analysts had forecast a net profit of EUR607 million and sales of EUR34.39 billion, according to a consensus provided by the company. Net debt fell to EUR2 billion from EUR2.2 billion at the end of 2019, Bouygues said. The company said its performance rebounded sharply in the second half of 2020 after the first was significantly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Looking forward, Bouygues said it expects earnings and sales to increase in 2021 in comparison to 2020, but that it doesn’t expect them to reach the levels of 2019. This guidance assumes no further deterioration due to the pandemic, it added. The company proposed a dividend of EUR1.70, unchanged from the previous year.

Gold Fields Ltd. reported Thursday a more-than fourfold increase in net profit for 2020 as revenue was boosted by increased gold production, and raised its final dividend. The South African gold miner made a net profit of $723 million for the year compared with $161.6 million in 2019. Revenue rose to $1.77 billion from $1.39 billion the prior year. This figure excludes the Asanko Gold Mine joint venture in Ghana. The board declared a final dividend of 3.2 South African rand (22 U.S. cents) a share, up from ZAR1 a year earlier. Gold Fields said it produced 593,000 ounces of gold equivalent in the fourth quarter and 2.24 million ounces of gold equivalent in the whole of 2020, in line with latest guidance. It had produced 557,000 ounces in the third quarter of 2020 and 590,000 ounces in the fourth quarter of 2019. The company said it expects to produce between 2.30 million and 2.35 million ounces this year. “2021 is going to be a big capital expenditure year for Gold Fields, given the peak spending at Salares Norte as well as the increase in sustainable capex for the group,” the company said. Total capital expenditure for the year is expected to hit $1.18 billion, it said.

Airbus SE booked an unsurprising net loss for 2020 despite turning a profit in its fourth quarter and issued a guidance for 2021. The European plane maker said Thursday its full-year net loss was 1.13 billion euros ($1.36 billion), compared with a loss of EUR1.36 billion in 2019 when it was hit by a EUR3.6 billion penalty related to a corruption settlement probe. For its fourth quarter, net profit came in at EUR1.55 billion. The aerospace giant’s closely watched adjusted earnings before interest and taxes fell 75% in 2020 to EUR1.71 billion. Revenues fell 29% to EUR49.91 billion. Free cash flow before merger & acquisition and customer financing was roughly EUR4.9 billion in the fourth quarter and Airbus ended 2020 with a total outflow of EUR6.94 billion, it said. The company, based in Toulouse, France, company issued guidance for 2021 assuming no further disruptions to the world economy and air traffic because of the coronavirus pandemic. On that basis, the company targets at least the same number of aircraft deliveries in 2021 than in 2020 and an adjusted EBIT of EUR2 billion or more. Airbus also targets at least breakeven free cash flow before M&A and customer financing at the end of the year. The company won’t propose a dividend for 2020, it said.

Atos SE said Thursday that revenue for the fourth quarter of 2020 fell, and issued guidance for 2021. The French IT company said fourth-quarter revenue slipped to 2.91 billion euros ($3.50 billion) from EUR3 billion at constant scope and exchange rates in the fourth quarter of 2019. The result represents an organic decline of 2.9%. “In the last quarter of 2020 and in spite of a lengthy Covid crisis, the very strong commercial dynamism of the group led to record high bookings for the full year,” Chief Executive Elie Girard said. For 2020, Atos said net profit rose to EUR550 million from EUR414 million, while operating profit fell to EUR1 billion from EUR1.16 billion, representing 9.0% of revenue. In October, it had guided for a 2020 operating margin rate between 9% and 9.5% of revenue. Atos issued guidance for 2021, projecting revenue growth at constant currency between 3.5% and 4%, while operating margin should be up by between 40 basis points and 80 basis points compared with 2020. The company said it would propose a dividend of EUR0.90 a share to the annual general meeting, with payout of the ordinary dividend slated for May.

Air France-KLM said Thursday that it anticipates a challenging first quarter after swinging to a hefty net loss in its fourth quarter 2020 as travel restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic remain in place. The Franco-Dutch airline booked a net loss of 1 billion euros ($1.21 billion) for the quarter compared with a net profit of EUR155 million the year prior, while its closely-watched operating result also swung to a loss of EUR1.13 billion. Revenue plunged 64% to EUR2.36 billion in the quarter, it said. Air France-KLM anticipates a challenging first quarter with capacity expected at 40% of 2019’s levels due to coronavirus lockdowns and restrictions imposed by various countries. Its first-quarter earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization is expected to be below its fourth-quarter Ebitda loss of EUR407 million, it said. “The group will progressively ramp up capacity towards summer 2021 and expects recovery in the second and third quarter 2021 thanks to the vaccine deployment,” the carrier said. At the end of last year, Air France-KLM had EUR9.8 billion in liquidity and credit lines and EUR11 billion in net debt.

Orange said Thursday that revenue for the fourth quarter fell, and outlined proposals for dividends covering 2020 and 2021. The French telecommunications company said quarterly revenue fell to 10.92 billion euros ($13.15 billion) from EUR10.94 billion on a comparable basis in the fourth quarter of 2019. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization after leases, or Ebitdaal, slipped to EUR3.18 billion in the quarter from EUR3.26 billion on a comparable basis. The company began using Ebitdaal as a financial indicator in 2019 to account for the adoption of the IFRS 16 accounting standard. For 2020, the company said net profit climbed to EUR4.82 billion from EUR3 billion in 2019, while Ebitdaal fell to EUR12.68 billion from EUR12.81 billion on a comparable basis. Orange had guided for a decline in 2020 Ebitdaal of about 1%, including all the effects related to the coronavirus pandemic. For 2021, Orange expects stable but negative Ebitdaal and confirmed its goal to generate between EUR3.5 billion and EUR4 billion in organic cash flow in 2023. The company said it would ask shareholders in May to vote on a dividend payout of EUR0.70 a share, plus EUR0.20 a share linked to a EUR2.2 billion tax refund. Orange also said it would propose a 2021 dividend of EUR0.70 a share to the 2022 shareholders’ meeting, with an interim dividend of EUR0.30 a share to be paid in December.

Nestle SA said Thursday that 2020 net profit fell while sales rose organically and that it expects continued improvement in organic growth and profitability. The Swiss food-and-beverage company said net profit for the year was 12.23 billion Swiss francs ($13.65 billion) compared with CHF12.61 billion the previous year. Sales decreased on year to CHF84.34 billion. Organic growth reached 3.6%, supported by strong momentum in the Americas as well as Purina PetCare and Nestle Health Science. Analysts had forecast net profit of CHF11.97 billion and sales of CHF84.78 billion, according to a company-compiled consensus. Looking at the current year, Nestle said it expects a continued increase in organic sales growth toward a mid single-digit rate and continued, moderate improvement in underlying trading operating profit margin. It sees an increase in underlying earnings per share at constant currency and capital efficiency, the company said. In the mid term, it expects sustained mid single-digit sales growth. Nestle said its board of directors will propose a dividend of CHF2.75 a share, an increase of 5 centimes, at the annual general meeting scheduled for April 15.

Credit Suisse on Thursday posted a 22% fall in 2020 net profit as a 757 million franc hit from legal charges placed Switzerland’s second-largest lender in the red for the final three months of the year. The bank posted a 353 million Swiss franc ($392.79 million) net loss for the fourth-quarter, compared with expectations for a 566 million franc loss in its own poll of 18 analysts. The poll was compiled before the bank settled a legacy residential mortgage-backed security case for $80 million less than it had previously flagged. “Despite a challenging environment for societies and economies in 2020, we saw a strong underlying performance across Wealth Management and Investment Banking, while addressing historic issues,” Chief Executive Thomas Gottstein said in a statement. “Looking forward into 2021 and beyond, we aim to further accelerate growth in Wealth Management and deliver sustainable returns in Investment Banking.” Wealth managers have profited richly off bumper trading and client demand for greater counsel during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping rivals UBS Group AG (SIX:UBSG) and Julius Baer Gruppe AG post windfall gains. Credit Suisse, however, faced setbacks in its core business last year everywhere outside Asia. Outside Asia, only Credit Suisse’s investment bank managed to post profit gain in 2020, as higher expected lending losses and headwind from negative interest rates and a strong Swiss franc bit into earnings. Factoring out one-off gains that boosted results in 2019 and set it back in 2020, the bank said it would have seen a 6% pre-tax profit gain for the year.

U.S. stock markets fell sharply at the opening on Thursday, after an unexpected rise in weekly jobless claims sparked fears that trades anticipating an economic recovery in the course of the year may have gone too far, too fast. By 9:45 AM ET (1445 GMT), the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 231 points, or 0.7%, at 31,382 points. The S&P 500 was likewise down 0.7% and the Nasdaq Composite was down 1.0%. Earlier, the Labor Department had said initial jobless claims rose to 861,000 last week, instead of falling to 765,000 as expected. The news blunted the optimism that had been prompted by a strong retail sales report for January, which had been released on Wednesday. The figures suggested that the sharp rise in consumer spending enabled by stimulus checks was masking a much more severe weakness in the labor market, a point made repeatedly by Federal Reserve officials in recent weeks. Early trade was also overshadowed by a weaker-than-expected report from Walmart. The big-box retailer’s stock fell 6.1% after the company said sales will hardly grow in the next 12 months, after posting a solid 8% rise in the 12 months through January.(Geoffrey Smith, investing.com)
