Thirty one refugees died helpless in small Turkish lake
Thirty-one bodies have been recovered from a migrant boat that sank in eastern Turkey’s Lake Van as efforts to locate victims of the accident continue, according to the Turkish media.
Reportedly carrying more than 100 migrants, the boat sank on June 27 in Lake Van, a new route for migrants coming from eastern countries such as Afghanistan and Iran who are trying to avoid detection by security forces in Turkey’s Southeast. Lake Van is situated in Turkey and is not a border to other countries. It is unknown why the event has been hidden by the Turkish authorities for 20 days.We note that Turkish authorities accuse other countries about the ‘conditions they take care of refugees’. It is unknown also why Refugee NGOs, that are so vigilant in covering migrant deaths in other countries, were not so far interested in covering the event. It is not the first time that refugees die in Lake Van. In December 2019, at least seven people died there as well in another ‘boat sunk’. Lake Van has less than 20 km diameter.
