Racist lecturer in University of Cambridge is promoted to Professor after tweet

Priyamvada Gopal, a lecturer in University of Cambridge that tweeted an unbelievably racist tweet, against all the people of white skin,
has been promoted today to a Professor, as the lecturer announced herself in the social site ‘Medium’ and tweeted in her personal ‘twitter account’ The unbelievable racist comment of the lecturer was the following ‘I ‘ll say it again. White Lives Don’t Matter’.

The tweet sparked many negative reactions, as it believed to direct hate to all people of the white race.

In any case,  a lecturer that would tweet a racist comment like ‘black live does not matter’, or ‘yellow life does not matter’, or ‘lives of people of the red race do not matter’, could spark a debate and the lecturer could be suspended from teaching, as discrimination against people of a particular colour, is not compatible with the UK values of inclusiveness, and is at odds with the teaching standards of any UK University. However, in spite of this racist tweet, the lecturer has been promoted overnight, as she said in her message, to a Professor. Now it is up to the students , and the UK society to examine whether the compensation of a racist behaviour in the University of Cambridge should be granted. In any case, a statement such as ‘white lives do not matter’ is at odds with the curriculum in UK universities that promotes racial diversity.

The message of the lecturer in Medium, was the following.

‘Thanks to a concerted campaign by 4 Chan and other right-wing white nationalist groups, the great entities for free speech that are Twitter and Facebook have suspended me for making public the hate mail I have received. Go figure!

Anyway, it’s fine, I need a break from social media. I am writing this post to make an announcement that I hope young women and the people of colour routinely intimidated by white supremacists and/or Hindutva bigots will feel cheered up by. Last night, Cambridge University announced that I have been promoted to a Professorial Chair. I’m grateful to all those who supported this endeavour, including and especially my departmental chair, colleagues and referees. I am very grateful to Verso Press for publishing my recent book Insurgent Empire which was the main basis for the promotion in addition to two teaching awards given to me by the wonderful students of Cambridge University.

Stay strong, everyone. And many thanks for your support!’
